Rowan Anderson oath of allegience, 1876.

Oath of allegience taken by Kentucky Guard solider, Rowan Anderson, dated 12 April 1876. Anderson adds a note on the oath regarding a duel he participated in on 13 May 1868, but for which he was pardoned by the Governor, 5 April 1876.

Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard.
